Yesterday I took my son fishing for a bit down at the creek. I don't think he was too enthused as he had expected to go to Cibolo this morning but due to the wife's car having trouble I let her use my car to get to work and we had to stay close to home with the unreliable transportation. The Cibolo is great but it is about 35 miles from the house, Salado is about 2 miles.
The boy just wasn't having any luck and his patience was lost in fast time, he also didn't want to wade fish so we cut the day short. I did manage to catch a nice spotted bass on my 3wt rod but before the trip was over it broke near the tip, luckily this was an unexpensive rod.
This morning I took my South Fork rod down to the creek and fished my way upstream toward the car. The perch were willing on the hopper but little else bit until I switched over to an Olive Bugger- then it got good. On my first cast I saw a nice Rio hit on it but missed the hook, then with a little more patience I caught a nice one. A small bass followed, bit, but missed the hook also. Casting into a pocket I then saw 2 nice bass of about 16" followed by a slightly smaller one, a fish hit but much to my disappointment didn't get hooked. Shortly thereafter I hooked another nice Rio and then downstream in a shallow pool with some lily pads a nice 14" or so spotted bass took the fly. The bass was a beauty, it jumped about 3 times and tried to take me into an overhanging tree but I was able to bring it to hand. The day turned out great and I really needed the stress release after contemplating how I'm going to pay to get the wife's car fixed, ugh.
Sorry about the pictures not aligning with the text, I'll have to work on getting this fixed. I just wanted to get the post up before forgetting to do it.
